Wheel Bolt Specification (E Series)

  • Thread size: M12 x 1.5

  • Typical thread length: 26mm

  • Seat type: 60° tapered cone

  • Hex size: 17mm

  • Torque setting: Around 120 Nm

The earlier BMW 3 Series models (E21, E30 and E36) use smaller M12 bolts. Then came a maor facelift with the popular E46, this gernation continued to use the M12 wheel bolts. From 2004 – 2007 the E90 ushered in the more modern look for the 3 series. This often causes some confusion, but the E90, E91, E92 and E93 still use the same M12 x 1.5 wheel bolts.

If fitting aftermarket alloy wheels, you may require different bolt lengths or slim/tuner style bolts for recessed holes.

Aftermarket Alloy Wheels & BMW 3 Series

If your BMW 3 Series has aftermarket alloy wheels fitted, you may require:

  • A different bolt length

  • Slim or tuner-style wheel bolts

When using aftermarket alloy wheels it is sometimes necessary use spacers to allow for different offsets.

Using incorrect bolt length or seat type can prevent proper wheel seating and may result in vibration or safety issues.

Some styles of aftermarket alloys are designed to fit multiple hub bolt patterns (PCD). This style of wheel is often referred to as multi fitment alloy and will have 8 – 10 bolt holes. Due to the extra number of holes they are drilled narrower than standard and you will need to use Tuner or Slim bolts.

If unsure, measure the original bolt length and confirm thread engagement before purchasing.
