Do you need special nuts for alloy wheels?

Nuts and bolts are used to fasten wheels to the car and are arguably one of the most important parts on a car and usually overlooked.

Alloy wheels do use specific nuts and bolts depending on the manufacturer of your car or if you have purchased aftermarket alloys for your car.

The most common things for you to check when buying a new set of alloy wheel nuts or bolts is the thread size and seat type.

Common thread sizes

Most cars are measured in mm (metric) where the M number is the thread width and the small number is the pitch.

Common Seat Types

The seat refers to the section of the nut or bolt that makes contact with the wheel. This is very important as there must be sufficient surface contact to ensure correct fitment.

How do I know what nuts or bolts I need for my car wheels?

If you are not sure which wheel nuts and bolts you need then you can use our simple search on the home page or at the top of the page in the menu bar. Simply type your car model and our system will give you the correct fitment nuts or bolts.

If you are still unsure then you maybe able to find the thread size in your owner’s manual, if not then a quick search online should provide the information. When it comes to the seat type the easiest way is to look at one of your existing nuts or bolts, if the section directly under the head is a cone shape then you will need a taper seat. If the shape is curved more like a bowl then you will need radius seat and probably the most obvious is if your nuts or bolts have a flat washer then you need flat seat.

Common taper seat fitment are: Alpha Romeo, BMW, Fiat, Ford, Renault, Saab, Vauxhall.

Common Radius seat fitment are: Audi, Mercedes, Seat, Skoda, VW

Common Flat seat fitment are: Citroen, Jaguar, Lexus, Peugeot, Toyota.

What are tuner nuts and bolts?

If you have purchased aftermarket alloy wheels for your car then you may find you have what is called multi fitment. This is where the wheels have more nut and bolts holes than usual. Most cars are either 4 or 5 stud, but multi fitment may have up to 10 holes.

To allow the extra nut and bolts holes on these aftermarket alloys they require slim / narrow nuts or bolts. This is where tuner nuts come in, they are round and usually 20mm in diameter. There is no hexagonal head and instead a splined key is fitted into the top of the nut or bolt to fit them.

What size are Ford Mondeo alloy wheel nuts? You will need M12 x 1.5 thread, taper seat, 19mm hex nuts. There are different styles to choose from and below these are explained.

I have aftermarket alloy wheels on my Ford Mondeo, what wheel nuts do I need?

Aftermarket wheels come in many styles, but one thing to be sure of is that the original Ford wheel nuts are likely to be too wide.

If your alloy wheels are PCD specific for the Mondeo, ie 5×108, then you will want to use a standard 19mm hex, taper seat, M12x1.5 wheel nut. These are a fixed seat (no washer) and are 23mm diameter.

What size alloy wheel nut do I need for a Ford Focus?

Well the technical Specification for a Ford Focus alloy wheel nut is
19mm Hex
60 degree taper / conical seat
M12 x 1.5 thread

However there is a small difference in what nuts you will need depending on whether you are fitting genuine Ford or aftermarket alloy wheels.

Genuine Ford Alloy wheels have a slightly wider than standard nut hole and you will need to buy nuts that have a seat diameter of 28mm, this is often accomplished via a captive washer.

Aftermarket alloy wheels generally have the more standard 23mm or 24mm wide nut holes, there are many nuts available for this size and they will be fixed seat (no washer). Some aftermarket wheels are designed to fit more than just one manufacturer of car and have a multi fitment PCD, this means they have either 8 or 10 nut holes. In this case you will need another style of alloy wheel nut altogether. Tuner or slim fit nuts are used with these multi fitment wheels.

Ford cars alloy wheel nuts and bolts

Original Ford alloy wheel nuts often come with a metal cap fitted. These caps are designed to be the main head of the nut, however they are thin and therefore soft and often get damage and even come off. The wheel nut head underneath these caps is not a standard hex size and can cause difficulties when changing tyres as a standard hex wheel brace will not fit.

For this reason many people want to change their Ford alloy wheel nuts. There are other things to look out for when changing the nuts though. The original Ford alloy wheel nuts have a captive washer making the overall width of the nut approx 28mm. This is wider than most aftermarket alloy wheel nuts which are usually around 23-24mm wide.
